The best sunrises at Angkor
Sunrise at Angkor Wat is Siem Reap's most popular activity, and for good reason. Watching the sun rise behind Angkor Wat's five towers, reflected in the lotus pools, is genuinely breathtaking. Arrive before 5:30am to grab a good spot near the north (left) pool.
Most operators offer pickups between 4:30 and 5:00am. After sunrise, continue to Angkor Thom and the Bayon while the light is still soft and the crowds thin. The Small Circuit takes about 4–5 hours and covers Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and several smaller temples.
For a less-crowded alternative, consider sunrise from Sra Srang, the Royal Bath, where you'll often have the panorama to yourself.
Best tours for families
Siem Reap is surprisingly family-friendly. The Angkor Botanical Garden offers butterfly gardens, orchid greenhouses, and shaded trails perfect for young children. For active kids, quad bike tours (minimum age 8–10) are a huge hit, crossing rice paddies and villages.
Cooking classes welcome children from age 5, teaching them to make spring rolls and sticky rice with mango. The Cambodian Landmine Museum offers an educational experience for older kids (10+). Avoid long temple circuits with very young children.
Focus on 2–3 temples max per day, with pool time between visits. Tuk-tuk drivers make great family guides because kids love the open-air ride.
Off the beaten path
Beyond the main Angkor circuit, several less-visited sites reward adventurous travelers. Beng Mealea, 68 km east of Siem Reap, is a vast jungle-swallowed temple with massive roots growing through collapsed galleries. Koh Ker, the ancient capital, features a 30-meter step pyramid called Prasat Thom that you can climb for panoramic views.
Banteay Chhmar, near the Thai border, has extraordinary Avalokiteshvara bas-reliefs with virtually no other tourists. Closer to town, Preah Khan offers a peaceful alternative to Ta Prohm with similar root scenes but a fraction of the visitors. The Roluos Group (Bakong, Preah Ko, Lolei) predates Angkor Wat by 300 years and sees very few tourists despite being just 13 km from town.
Best Tonle Sap boat trips
The Tonle Sap Lake is Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake and home to fascinating floating villages. The best option is Osmose, an eco-tourism NGO that takes small groups to the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary and Kompong Phluk floating village. Unlike mass tours (avoid Chong Kneas, very touristy and commercialized), Osmose provides knowledgeable guides and supports local communities.
The best time is the rainy season (July–October) when the lake expands to five times its dry-season size. In dry season (January–April), Kompong Khleang offers 10-meter stilt houses, creating a spectacular landscape. Plan $25–40 per person for a quality half-day boat trip.
How to choose a tour guide
A good guide turns a temple visit into a narrative experience. Official Angkor guides carry an ID issued by the Apsara Authority and have been trained in Khmer history and archaeology. Expect $35–50 per day for an official guide, plus $15–25 for a tuk-tuk or $50–70 for an air-conditioned car.
Book through reputable agencies like Siem Reap Shuttle Tours, Discova, or JOURNEY CAMBODIA for vetted guides. For French speakers, Guide Francophone Officiel (T.A.V) offers excellent French-language tours with deep historical context. Always agree on the itinerary, price, and pickup time the night before.
Tip $5–10 per day if you're satisfied. The best guides are booked weeks in advance during high season (November–February).

How much does an Angkor Wat tour cost?
The Angkor Pass costs $37 for one day, $62 for three days, or $72 for seven days. Add $15–25 for a tuk-tuk or $50–70 for a private air-conditioned car. An official English-speaking guide costs $35–50 per day. Total budget for a full day: $50–120 per person.
When's the best time to visit Angkor Wat?
November to February for the best weather: cool temperatures (25–30°C) and dry skies. For sunrise, arrive before 5:30am. The quietest months are June and September. Avoid March–April when temperatures top 38°C.
How many days do you need for the temples?
Two to three days is ideal. Day 1: Angkor Wat sunrise + Small Circuit (Bayon, Ta Prohm). Day 2: Grand Circuit (Preah Khan, Neak Pean, Pre Rup). Day 3: outer temples like Banteay Srei, Beng Mealea, or Koh Ker.
Are cooking classes worth it in Siem Reap?
Absolutely. Cooking classes typically cost $15–25 and include a market visit, preparation of 4–5 Khmer dishes, and the meal itself. Khmer Cooking Class at a Local's Home is the top-rated option with 1,595 5-star reviews. Duration: 3–4 hours, morning departure.
Is Tonle Sap Lake worth visiting?
Yes, but choose your tour carefully. Avoid mass tours at Chong Kneas. Prefer Osmose (eco-tourism NGO) or visit Kompong Phluk or Kompong Khleang. Budget: $25–40 per person for a quality half-day.
Can you visit Angkor Wat without a guide?
Yes, you can explore independently with just a tuk-tuk driver ($15–25/day). However, an official guide ($35–50/day) adds enormous value by explaining history, symbolism, and hidden details. For a first visit, we strongly recommend a guide.
What adventure activities are available?
Siem Reap offers quad biking ($25–55), horseback riding ($20–45), off-road motorbiking ($35–80), Vespa tours ($69–125), zip-lining, kayaking, and bicycle tours ($20–45). Most activities run year-round.
Is it safe to book online before arriving?
Yes, advance booking is recommended in high season (November–February) when the best guides fill up. For low season (May–September), you can easily arrange tours on the spot.
How should you dress for the temples?
Temples require modest dress: shoulders and knees covered. Bring a light long-sleeve top and pants or a sarong. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle are must-haves.
How do you avoid tourist traps in Siem Reap?
Book through the agencies listed in our ranking rather than street touts. Avoid Chong Kneas (too commercialized). Negotiate the tuk-tuk price before the ride. Skip the overpriced Pub Street restaurants and eat where the locals eat.
