Siem Reap has one of the best hostel scenes in South East Asia, and the reason is arithmetic. Land is cheap, labour is cheap, and the town has spent twenty years learning what backpackers want, so a dorm bed with a rooftop pool costs less here than a bed without one almost anywhere else. The result is a category where the bottom is decent and the top is genuinely good, which makes choosing harder rather than easier.

This ranking scores each hostel on its Google rating weighted by review volume, so the small perfect scores do not displace the institutions, then corrects for what the numbers cannot see: whether a place is a party hostel or a quiet one. Fourteen made the list, split into the big names, the quiet and boutique options, and the small cheap rooms. The split matters more than the order, because booking a party hostel when you wanted sleep is the one mistake that ruins a stay.

Which area to stay in

Almost every hostel worth booking sits within a fifteen-minute walk of the Old Market, which is also where the tuk-tuks, the restaurants and the night markets are. Onederz, Lub d and White Rabbit are in that central band, close enough to walk home from Pub Street and far enough that the noise fades. Siem Reap Pub Hostel is the exception, deliberately planted next to the strip for people who want the walk to be thirty seconds.

The Funky Village and Pool Party sit slightly out, which buys them space for a pool and costs you a two-dollar tuk-tuk. Nothing on this list is far from the temples: the Angkor ticket office is a ten-minute ride from all of them, and every hostel here sells the sunrise tour.

Private rooms in hostels

Half of this list sells private rooms alongside its dorms, usually at $15 to $25 a night, which undercuts most guesthouses while keeping the hostel's bar, pool and tour desk. Onederz, Lub d, White Rabbit and Siem Reap Comfort all do this well. It is the obvious move for couples who want hostel prices and hostel social life without a shared room, and for solo travellers who want one quiet night in the middle of a long trip.

Book the private room directly rather than through a channel: at these prices the commission is a meaningful share of the rate, and most of these places will match or beat it.

Hostels with a pool

A pool is the single feature that changes an afternoon in Siem Reap, where the heat between noon and four makes temple visits unpleasant and sightseeing pointless. Onederz has the rooftop, which is the best of them because it comes with a view over the Old Market. The Funky Village, Pool Party Hostel and Siem Reap Pub Hostel all build their social life around the water, so the pool is loud and full by three in the afternoon.

Lub d has one too, calmer, with a design-hotel feel. If you plan to be out at Angkor from five in the morning, an afternoon pool is not a luxury but the thing that makes the next sunrise possible.

Party hostel or quiet hostel

This is the only decision that matters. Mad Monkey and Siem Reap Pub Hostel are party hostels and make no secret of it: organised bar crawls, pool games, music until late. The Funky Village and Pool Party sit just behind them.

If that is what you came for, they deliver it better than anywhere else in Cambodia. If it is not, Bokre Angkor, Noni Tree, Gecko and Atoh's Maison are the other end of the same town, small rooms in quiet streets where the loudest thing at midnight is a gecko. Reviewers who booked the wrong one write the angriest reviews on this page, and their complaint is never about the hostel, only about the mismatch.

What a hostel costs in Siem Reap

A dorm bed runs from about $5 in the small places to $12 at the big names with pools, and private rooms sit between $15 and $25. That range has barely moved in years, because supply is generous. Prices climb between December and February and during Khmer New Year in April, when booking a week ahead becomes worth it.

Outside those windows you can walk in almost anywhere. Breakfast is usually extra and rarely worth it at $3 to $4 when a street bowl of noodles costs a dollar and a half. The tour desk, on the other hand, is often the cheapest way to book an Angkor sunrise tuk-tuk, since the hostel is splitting one driver across four guests.

How we ranked these 14 hostels

Directory data

Ratings, addresses and coordinates come from our own Siem Reap directory, refreshed from Google Places.

Weighted scoring

Each hostel was scored on its Google rating weighted by the logarithm of its review count, so a 5.0 across forty reviews does not outrank a 4.7 across nearly two thousand.

Local correction

The list was then split by character rather than by score, because the difference between a party hostel and a quiet one decides a stay more than half a rating point does.
