Why Pay for a Siem Reap Luxury Hotel Over Mid-Range

The more hours you spend at your hotel, the more a luxury stay returns. Here is where the difference shows.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Verdict: Pay for a luxury hotel when you plan to spend long hours at the hotel, and choose mid-range when you are out from dawn to dusk. The extra spend returns most in rooms, service, grounds, dining and spa.
  • Where you feel it: In the space and privacy of your room, in a team that plans your day, in larger grounds, in more places to eat and in a fuller spa. The gap differs from hotel to hotel, and some hotels in the $$–$$$ band already offer a great deal.
  • Ratings: Google ratings in our directory sit between 4.6 and 4.9 across both price bands, so both tiers earn guest praise. The real question is how you will use your days.
  • Next step: Read the five gains below, check which profile sounds like you, then open the room page or the mid-range page that matches your plan.

A Siem Reap trip has a natural rhythm: early temple mornings, then a return to the hotel when the heat rises. That return is where a luxury hotel and a mid-range hotel part ways. If the afternoon is a swim, a massage and a long dinner, you use everything a luxury property offers. If you only sleep and shower, a well-run mid-range hotel serves you beautifully.

This page sets out the rule, the five visible gains and the traveller profiles for whom the step up is largest and smallest. Throughout, we use the price bands from our directory: $$$$ marks the top band and $$–$$$ marks the middle band. For a wider view of your options, see Is a Siem Reap Luxury Hotel Right for Your Trip?, and for every budget at once, Best Hotels in Siem Reap, All Budgets.

The rule: count your hours at the hotel

Start with a simple count of the hours you will spend at the hotel on a typical day. A traveller who returns at noon, swims, books a spa session and dines on site may spend six or more hours at the property. A traveller who leaves at sunrise and returns for dinner may spend very few.

The more hours you plan to spend inside the gates, the more each luxury feature pays back: the larger room, the quiet garden, the second restaurant, the treatment room. The fewer hours you plan, the more a mid-range price makes sense, because you would pay for features that sit unused.

The rule in one line: pay up when the hotel is part of the holiday, stay mid-range when the hotel is only the bed.

The five gains you can see

Rooms

The top band offers the most room variety and privacy. Zannier Phum Baitang has 45 stilted villas modelled on a traditional Khmer village, with Terrace Villas of 62 sqm and Pool Villas of 72 sqm that each include a 20 sqm plunge pool. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor has 119 rooms, suites and villas, and Park Hyatt Siem Reap has 104 suites and rooms facing the street or the hotel gardens.

The middle band still delivers comfort. At Borei Angkor Resort & Spa the Deluxe Room measures 40 sqm and the site lists eight room categories up to a Royal Suite of 188 sqm. FCC Angkor by Avani has 80 rooms and suites in a former French governor's residence, with views of the gardens, the pool or the river.

Service

Service is where the top band stands out most clearly. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor states that every stay includes a personal butler. Zannier Phum Baitang has a concierge and an around-the-clock reception team. These are the people who turn a temple day into a smooth plan.

The middle band can surprise you here. Borei Angkor Resort & Spa lists room service 24 hours a day, a medical doctor on call 24 hours a day, complimentary daily cultural orientation sessions and a VIP Lounge for express check-in and check-out for VIP guests. For a deeper look, see Service Beyond the Room at Siem Reap Luxury Hotels.

Grounds

Space around the buildings is a quiet luxury. Zannier Phum Baitang is set in 20 acres, with a 50-metre infinity pool surrounded by tropical gardens. Lotus Blanc Resort describes a garden of 88 swaying coconut trees. Borei Angkor Resort & Spa describes its pool as a tropical lagoon with turquoise water.

Dining

Luxury hotels tend to give you several distinct places to eat without leaving the property. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor lists Cafe d'Angkor, Restaurant 1932, The Conservatory, Elephant Bar and a Poolside Terrace. Zannier Phum Baitang has two restaurants, Bay Phsar and Hang Bay. Borei Angkor Resort & Spa shows that the middle band can match this variety, with six dining venues including Ox Club and Phum Boraan.

Spa

Spa depth is easy to compare. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor has 6 treatment rooms, with male and female areas holding saunas, steam rooms and a Jacuzzi. Zannier Phum Baitang has two double and five single treatment rooms and a Serenity Temple for meditation. Borei Angkor Resort & Spa has eight rooms and one villa with 17 treatment beds, plus sauna and steam rooms.

What the directory ratings show

Our directory lists a Google rating and a review count for each hotel. Guests rate both bands highly, so a higher price buys a different kind of stay rather than a higher score.

Top band ($$$$), Google rating and review count

  • Zannier Phum Baitang: 4.9, more than 600 reviews
  • Park Hyatt Siem Reap: 4.7, more than 2,200 reviews
  • Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor: 4.7, more than 700 reviews

Middle band ($$–$$$), Google rating and review count

  • Borei Angkor Resort & Spa: 4.7, more than 1,700 reviews
  • Lotus Blanc Resort: 4.6, more than 1,900 reviews
  • FCC Angkor by Avani: 4.6, more than 800 reviews

The middle band earns strong ratings from many guests, and the top band earns equally strong ratings for stays that centre on the hotel itself.

Who gains most, and who gains least

The step up pays most for

  • Couples and honeymooners who want a private villa or plunge pool, as at Zannier Phum Baitang.
  • Travellers who plan rest afternoons between temple mornings and want a pool, spa and garden within the grounds.
  • Guests who value a personal touch, such as the butler stay at Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor.
  • Anyone staying four nights or more, because the hotel becomes a base you look forward to returning to.

Mid-range suits you well when

  • You leave at sunrise and return in the evening, so the room mostly serves for sleep.
  • You prefer to spend the difference on guides, drivers or restaurants in town.
  • You want a central location: FCC Angkor by Avani overlooks the Siem Reap river, three blocks from the main strip.
  • You want resort comfort at a lower price band, as at Borei Angkor Resort & Spa or Lotus Blanc Resort.

Families have good options in both bands: Park Hyatt Siem Reap, Zannier Phum Baitang, Borei Angkor Resort & Spa, Lotus Blanc Resort and Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor are each flagged as good for children on Google.

Where to go next

If the rule points you to a luxury hotel, the next question is the room. What Changes in a Siem Reap Luxury Room at Five Stars compares space, bedding and detail. If the rule points you to mid-range, Mid-Range Siem Reap Hotels With a Luxury Hotel Feel lists the hotels that borrow the most from the luxury tier.

When you are ready to book, enter the same dates on Agoda and Booking.com, compare the room category on both, and read the cancellation terms before you click. Confirm prices and inclusions on each hotel's page, as rates change through the year.
