How to Check Pool Safety at a Siem Reap Luxury Hotel

Six checks you can apply to any hotel, where to find the evidence, and what to ask for in writing.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Verdict: Run six checks: shallow zone, fencing and gates, lifeguard presence, depth markings, private-pool access and midday shade. Most hotels publish the pool's size and opening hours, and a short message to the front desk covers the rest.
  • Best for: Parents of young swimmers who want safe water time and a clear way to compare pools.
  • Good to know: The sources we hold list pool types, lengths and hours. Depths, fencing and lifeguard cover are best confirmed on the hotel's page or by message.
  • Next step: Pick two hotels, run the checklist, and send the sample question below before you book.

Pool time is often the best part of a family stay in Siem Reap, especially after a morning at the temples. A few minutes of preparation lets you enjoy it with confidence. The idea is simple: read what the hotel publishes, look at its photos and recent reviews, and ask a short question for anything missing.

This page gives you a six-point checklist, tells you where to find the evidence, explains the difference between a main pool, a children's pool and a private villa pool, and ends with a closing rule. For the wider family picture, see luxury hotels for kids and parents.

The six checks and why each matters

Pool safety checklist

  1. 1Shallow zone: a section where small children can stand. Why it matters: confident play without constant lifting.
  2. 2Fencing and gates: a barrier with a latch around the pool. Why it matters: it keeps toddlers from walking in alone.
  3. 3Lifeguard presence: a trained person on duty at the pool. Why it matters: a second pair of eyes for busy afternoons.
  4. 4Depth markings: depths painted or posted at the edge. Why it matters: children can choose the right area.
  5. 5Private-pool access: whether a villa or suite plunge pool opens straight onto the room. Why it matters: it changes how closely you supervise.
  6. 6Shade for the midday heat: umbrellas, a sala or trees near the water. Why it matters: Siem Reap is hot, and WeatherSpark describes April as the hottest month.

Score each hotel from 0 to 6 using only what its page, photos or message reply confirm. A feature you assume earns no point until you can read it.

Where to find the evidence

Three sources give you the full picture. Combine them for the best result.

Evidence sources

  • The hotel's own page and photos: look at the pool edges, the loungers, the shade and any signs.
  • Recent guest reviews: search for words such as pool, children and shade to see what families describe.
  • A short message to the front desk: it covers anything the page leaves out.

Sample question to copy

Hello, we are travelling with a child aged [age] from [date] to [date]. Could you tell us the depth of the pool and whether a shallow area, a fence with a gate and a lifeguard are available? Could you also confirm the pool opening hours? Thank you.

Ask for the reply in writing, by email, so you can show it at check-in. Pool depths and lifeguard hours are best taken from the hotel's own page or reply.

Main pool, children's pool and private villa pool

The hotels in our directory use all three types, and each one suits a different stay.

Main pools

Zannier Phum Baitang has an infinity pool that its Pool Bar describes as 50 metres, surrounded by tropical gardens. Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor has an outdoor pool of 35 metres, open daily from 7:00am to 7:00pm. Viroth's Hotel has a 20 m salt water pool open 07:00 to 22:00. Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra describes a free-form pool as the largest in Cambodia. Hours are as listed in October 2026, so confirm before you travel.

Children's pools and shallow sections

Sokha Siem Reap Resort lists a pool with an adjoining children's pool. Navutu Dreams has a child friendly plunge pool, according to Mr & Mrs Smith, alongside a freshwater lap pool and a saltwater lounge pool. Shinta Mani Angkor has two pools, a Bayon Pool of 23 metres and an Angkor Pool suited to swimming laps. FCC Angkor by Avani and Jaya House River Park each list two swimming pools.

Private villa and suite pools

Jaya House River Park lists a Junior Pool Suite with a private plunge pool. Zannier Phum Baitang lists Pool Villas with a 20 sqm plunge pool and a garden sala. Amansara lists 13 suites with a private plunge pool, with a Pool Suite plunge pool of 6 m by 5 m. Shinta Mani Angkor lists ten Bensley Pool Villas, each with a private pool of nine metres. A private pool is convenient for family time, and supervision stays with you.

Water beyond the hotel pool

CDC advises not swimming in freshwater where sanitation is poor, a helpful point for lake and floating-village excursions. Zannier Phum Baitang offers lake excursions to the stilted villages of Chong Kneas, Kompong Phluk or Mechrey, so ask your guide about swimming plans before you go.

The hotel pool is the easiest place to practise your checks. For the rest of the day, see family suites and connecting rooms and kids' clubs.

The closing rule and your booking

Closing rule: ask for the pool details in writing and keep the reply with your booking. Then enter the same dates and guests on Agoda and Booking.com, compare the price and read the cancellation terms.
