Checking a Siem Reap Luxury Hotel's Community Claims

A simple four-point method, where to find each proof, how to score a claim and worked examples from hotels in the directory.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Verdict: Run a four-point check: named partners, published figures, independent mentions and reviewer comments. A claim that passes at least three of the four is credible, and a claim that passes two deserves one more look before you rely on it.
  • Where to look: Start with the hotel's own page for partners and figures, then search for independent mentions, and read recent reviews on Agoda and Booking.com for what guests saw.
  • Strong examples: Shinta Mani Angkor names its founders and gives a graduate count, and Jaya House River Park names Green Gecko Center for Street Children and a family count. Zannier Phum Baitang publishes sustainability reports.
  • Next step: Score the hotel you like, then compare the same dates on Agoda and Booking.com and read the cancellation terms.

Hotels in Siem Reap increasingly talk about community and sustainability. Some statements are specific and easy to verify, and others are general. A quick method helps you tell them apart and choose a hotel whose story you can trust.

The method below takes about ten minutes per hotel. It uses statements hotels publish on their own pages, so you can follow the same steps for any property in the directory.

The four-point checklist

Score one point for each proof

  1. 1Named partners: the claim names the organisation, school, farm group or person involved
  2. 2Published figures: the claim gives a count, a year or a certification that you can look up
  3. 3Independent mentions: a source outside the hotel, such as a partner's page or a press article, repeats the claim
  4. 4Reviewer comments: recent guests mention the programme or practice in their reviews

A claim with three or four points is credible. With two points it is plausible, and you can either look for a third proof or treat it as background. With zero or one point it is a general statement, which is fine as a mood but a weak reason to choose a hotel.

Where to find each proof

Named partners and published figures usually sit on the hotel's own sustainability, community or about page. Look for names of organisations, founders, years and numbers. Certifications are best confirmed on the hotel's page and, when possible, on the certifier's own site.

Independent mentions come from outside the hotel: a partner organisation's page, a news article or a travel guide. Reviewer comments come from recent guests on Agoda and Booking.com, so search the reviews for words such as school, foundation, farm or community.

Programmes and figures can change, so check the date of each page you read and confirm the latest details with the hotel before you travel.

How to score a claim

Give each proof one point, add them up and write the total next to the hotel. Keep the scale simple. The aim is to decide quickly, and a decision rule beats a long report.

Reading the total

  • 3 or 4 points: credible, safe to use as a reason to choose the hotel
  • 2 points: plausible, worth one more search for an independent mention
  • 0 or 1 point: general wording, treat it as a pleasant extra

The hotel's own page can supply the first two points. The last two come from you, which is why the check rewards a few minutes of reading.

Worked examples from the directory

Shinta Mani Angkor: the hotel names the Shinta Mani Foundation and its founders, Bill Bensley and Sokoun Chanpreda, and states that the foundation is funded in part by room revenues. The school reports more than 300 graduates. That gives named partners and a published figure, so two points come from the hotel's own page. Reviews and an independent mention would complete the check.

Jaya House River Park: the hotel names Green Gecko Center for Street Children and states that it has empowered 32 families, that the group supports 3 NGOs monthly and that Refill Not Landfill was started in 2016 by Christian de Boer and Dean Mclachlan. Again two points come from the hotel's page, and the reader adds the other two.

Zannier Phum Baitang: the hotel states that it is Green Globe certified and publishes a 2026 Sustainability Management Plan and a 2025 Sustainability Report as PDFs. A certification and published reports offer figures you can open and read, so this claim starts strong on the published-figures point.

Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort: the hotel page displays Green Globe certification and names Eggscellent and Agrisud International as partners in supporting farmers, which covers named partners and a certification.

Angkor Village Hotel: the hotel says 100% of wastewater is treated in the house, that 100% of recyclable waste is sorted in house and recycled by a partner, and that community forestry was protected. The figures are clear, and the partner is unnamed, so asking the hotel who the partner is would raise the score.

Navutu Dreams: the resort says it strives to be a plastic free hotel and claims the largest green space of all Siem Reap hotels and resorts. These are statements of intent and comparison without a named partner or a figure, so they score low until you find more proof.

Tip: a hotel that answers a polite question about its partners or figures by email, with names and numbers, adds a strong proof to your score.

Turning the score into a decision

Once you have scored two or three hotels, pick the one that matches your priority. For hotels whose model is built on community purpose, see Social-Enterprise Luxury Hotels in Siem Reap. For hotels shaped by an owning family, see Family-Owned Luxury Hotels in Siem Reap.

Then compare the same dates on Agoda and Booking.com, read the cancellation terms and confirm programme details on the hotel's page. A scored claim and a flexible rate make a confident booking.

Test your knowledge

Five questions on this guide.

1. How many points make a community claim credible?
2. Which of these is a named partner?
3. Where can you read recent guest comments about a programme?
4. What does Zannier Phum Baitang publish?
5. What would raise the Angkor Village Hotel waste claim?

What are the four points of the check?

Named partners, published figures, independent mentions and reviewer comments. Each one earns one point.

Can a hotel's own page give me all four points?

The hotel's page can supply named partners and published figures. Independent mentions and reviewer comments come from outside sources.

How long does the check take?

About ten minutes per hotel, using the hotel's page, a quick search and recent reviews.

Where do I go once I have a score?

Compare the same dates on Agoda and Booking.com, read the cancellation terms and confirm programme details with the hotel before you travel.
