Over 4,600 Foreigners Arrested in Anti-Scam Operation in Banteay Meanchey

Between January 18 and May 6, 2026, authorities in Banteay Meanchey province, northwestern Cambodia, arrested 4,656 foreign nationals from 11 different nationalities. This operation is part of a broad campaign against online scams, a scourge particularly affecting the border region with Thailand. The arrests targeted networks operating from compounds and rented buildings, often involved in romance scams, fraudulent investments, and money laundering.

This crackdown is one of the largest ever conducted in Cambodia. It reflects international pressure, especially from China and Western countries, for the Cambodian government to act against these illegal activities that harm its reputation.
